Apple will hold their autumn event tomorrow where they’re expected to announce the iPhone 15, 15 Plus, Pro and Pro Max. New Apple Watch models including the Series 9 and an iterative update to the Ultra are also expected. Although famously secretive, the volume of products Apple ships make it almost impossible to keep everything unknown until the launch events. This year is no different.
New iPhone models are expected to ship with USB-C, a change Apple has been slow to adopt. Apple Fellow Phil Schiller did state the lightning connector was the port for the next decade when used for the iPhone 5 in 2012. The dynamic island is rumoured to be coming to the standard 15 and 15 Plus. Display sizes are remaining the same at 6.1 inches for the 15 and 15 Pro, with the 15 plus and 15 Pro Max remaining at 6.7 inches. Pro-Motion will remain exclusive to the Pro variants once again this year. We also expect to see the removal of the ever present mute switch, to be replaced with a customisable action button as featured on the Apple Watch Ultra.
The 15 and 15 Plus will continue to use an aluminium case which this year is said to feature a frosted glass back, something only the Pro models have had so far. It’s anticipated the pro models will use titanium for the case this year. Titanium is stronger and lighter than the stainless steel used since the iPhone X.
As we’ve seen for a number of years now, the brighter colours will be seen on the standard models with Black, Blue, Green, Pink and Coral the rumoured options. The Pro versions will be missing a Gold option for the first time in several years. Silver and Space Grey remain. The latter being a much darker offering this year. An as yet unnamed Dark Blue will possibly replace the Deep Purple from last year with an all new lighter ’Titan’ Grey, close to the basic titanium colour similar to Apple Watch Ultra has been heavily touted.
Very little has been said about this year’s camera improvements with the exception of a telescopic system which will allegedly only be available on the 15 Pro Max.
The A16 chip from the 14 Pro and Pro Max is said to be coming to the 15 and 15 Plus with the 15 Pro and Pro Max getting the new A17 based on a 3nm manufacturing process.
The much talked about price increase of $100/$200 (£100/£200) is likely to happen this year after several years at similar levels.
This year’s new cases are apparently dropping the leather variant and even the silicone option in favour of different materials similar to a woven fabric, little else is known.
Apple Watch Series 9 will retain the same design used since the very first and may be the first since the Series 6 to get an upgraded chip. Although different in name the processor in the Series 6, 7 and 8 are essentially the same. Improved heart rate sensors have been rumoured for both the Series 9 and second generation Ultra, which is expecting to get a new Black colour option.
As with the iPhone case rumours, the leather, silicone and fluoroelastomer Apple Watch bands are potentially going away. A new fabric band with magnetic attachments has been talked about in the run up to the event.
As in years past, pre-orders for the new iPhone and Apple Watch models will start on 15/9 with initial shipments arriving on 22/9.
Although possible there aren’t likely to be any new iPad or Mac models announced.
